The Right Level of Support At the Right Time

Every child and family’s situation is different - and so is the level of treatment they need.

At the Children’s Center of Hamden, we offer a continuum of care designed to meet youth where they are, respond to changing needs, and provide the right level of support at the right time.

Whether you’re just starting to explore options or navigating more complex challenges, our team is here to help you find a path forward.

Understanding Our Continuum of Care

Support isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Some children benefit from weekly therapy. Others may need more structured, intensive treatment for a period of time. Our continuum allows youth to move between levels of care as their needs change, ensuring they receive the appropriate support every step of the way.

Outpatient Services

Flexible, ongoing treatment for children and teens experiencing emotional or behavioral challenges. Through regular therapy sessions, youth build coping skills, strengthen relationships, and receive guidance while continuing life at home and in school. When appropriate, care may include psychiatric evaluation and medication management to support a child’s overall treatment plan.

Substance Use Treatment & Recovery

Nonjudgmental, evidence-based support for youth and young adults navigating substance use. From early screening to structured programs like SSTRY, services are designed to meet individuals where they are and support long-term recovery.

Extended Day Treatment (EDT)

Structured, short-term behavioral health services for youth who need more than weekly therapy but can remain at home. Through after school and summer programming up to 5 days per week, EDT helps build stability, strengthen skills, and prevent the need for more intensive care. Clinical support, including psychiatric evaluation and medication management, can be integrated into care based on each youth’s needs.

Psychiatric Residential Treatment (PRTF)

Short-term, comprehensive residential care for youth experiencing acute mental health challenges. Our program provides 24/7 support focused on stabilization, skill-building, and preparing for a successful transition home.

Whitney Hall School

A K–12 special education school offering a structured, supportive learning environment for students who need an alternative to traditional settings. Small class sizes and integrated services help students re-engage academically and build confidence.

Quality Parenting Center

A warm, welcoming space where children in foster care can spend meaningful time with their families. Private rooms and engaging activities foster connection, bonding, and positive shared experiences - at no cost to families.

Not Sure Where to Start?

You don’t need to have all the answers to reach out.

Many families come to us unsure what level of care is needed - and that’s okay. Our team will help assess your situation, answer your questions, and guide you toward the right next step.

Support can begin at any point and change over time as needs evolve.
