School Districts

A Trusted Partner in Supporting Students

When a student’s needs exceed what can be supported in a traditional school setting, finding the right placement is critical.

The Children’s Center of Hamden partners with school districts across Connecticut to provide specialized education and behavioral health support for students with complex needs.

Programs Available for Student Referrals

Whitney Hall School

Special Education Day School (K–12)

Whitney Hall School is a state-approved special education program for students whose behavioral or emotional challenges interfere with learning in a traditional setting.

  • Small class sizes (fewer than 10 students per class)
  • Individualized education plans (IEPs)
  • Integrated behavioral health supports
  • On-site clinical staff and social work services
  • Hands-on learning, electives, and vocational opportunities

Districts may refer students whose needs cannot be met in-district.

Extended Day Treatment (EDT)

Structured Afterschool Treatment Program

Extended Day Treatment provides a higher level of support than weekly outpatient therapy while allowing students to remain at home and in their current school.

  • Up to 5 days per week of structured treatment
  • Group therapy, skill-building, and clinical support
  • Family involvement and caregiver engagement
  • Coordination with schools to support behavior and attendance

Outpatient Behavioral Health Services

Flexible Clinical Support for Students

Outpatient services offer ongoing therapeutic support for students experiencing emotional or behavioral challenges.

  • Individual and family therapy
  • Psychiatric evaluation and medication management when appropriate
  • Trauma-informed care
  • Collaboration with schools to support student success

A Collaborative Approach

We work closely with districts to ensure continuity, communication, and alignment with each student’s educational and behavioral goals.

Our team partners with:

  • Special education directors
  • School psychologists and social workers
  • PPT teams

Together, we create a plan that supports both immediate needs and long-term success.

Referrals & Next Steps

Referrals are reviewed on an individual basis, and we work with districts to determine appropriate placement and availability.
