This 24-hour-a-day treatment program on the Hamden Campus has long been the
signature program of The Children’s Center. Children live in small groups in
three separate cottages and enjoy a supportive, structured and safe environment.
The girls have their own separate cottage program.
Youth are referred by a variety of sources, primarily the Department of Children
and Families. They range in age from 11 to 18 with an average length of stay of
just over 9 months. Youth in this program are likely to have experienced
multiple placements in a variety of settings, often with some experience in
psychiatric hospitals. The majority of youth have both psychiatric and
behavioral difficulties, some involving psychotic features, depression,
attention and impulse control difficulties.
Residential treatment is considered a “last resort” for youth who are unable to
live in less structured settings. Our youth are likely to have experienced many
failures and to have trouble trusting others often manifested by significant
limit-testing and oppositionality, pervasive hopelessness, poor self-esteem and
anger.
The majority of youth in the Residential Treatment Program attend Whitney Hall
School, on grounds. They receive medical services including medication
management, take their meals and enjoy recreational activities as well. They all
receive treatment services including individual, group and family therapy. The
living environment is moderately structured with a trauma informed behavior
management system designed to strengthen relationships and modify behaviors with
realistic consequences and positive motivators.
The Residential Treatment Program utilizes a treatment team approach which
includes staff members, clinical therapists, nursing staff, our consulting child
psychiatrist, the child, family and other stakeholders. Treatment plans are
individualized for each young person in the program and designed to allow for
the shortest length of stay possible. Treatment reviews are done every 30 days
for each youth in the program.
